“Small Hadron Collider” | Interactive LED Light Art Installation

We’re made of atoms, but what are atoms made of? Small Hadron Collider invites us to ponder the basic building blocks that make up our bodies, and the natural world that we are a part of.

By interacting with Small Hadron Collider, the user plays the role of a powerful subatomic force, capable of shooting and colliding subatomic particles in the form of beautiful colorful patterns of light. Participating in Small Hadron Collider makes for a fun, engaging interactive experience that invokes a sense of wonder, joy, and empowerment.

Small Hadron Collider is an artwork that connects people through a shared playful experience. It inspires us to wonder about the particles that make up our world, and creates a sense of curiosity about the building blocks of the universe. Because we are all made of the same space dust, man!

Small Hadron Collider is an interactive LED light art installation that lets users launch “particles” of light along a 50’ long LED strip that comes up off the ground into a 9’ tall loop in the air.

Two trampolines on either side of the sculpture are used to trigger animations of light along the length of the sculpture. When people jump on the trampolines on either end, it becomes a game to try to time their jump in such a way so that the light particles collide at the apex of the loop.

Small Hadron Collider was originally commissioned by Black Rock Arts Foundation in 2020. It was awarded an Honorarium art grant and exhibited at Burning Man 2022. An early version of the project was shown at Country Club 2022 in Upstate NY.

About the artist: Everything Good Studio is a collaboration between Rachel Ciavarella and Jack Kalish, a multi-disciplinary art and design team based in Brooklyn, NY. Our work is focused on creative and innovative applications of new and emerging technologies. We are interested in the use of art and technology as a means of exploring new ideas through engagement and immersion.
